Margot picks up the gun to defend her husband, trying to save him in the face of danger. Sadness that the wife was such a disagreeable person, that she too had to be disappointed in her marriage, that she had so little concern for her husband.
If she purposefully shoots him, she has preserved her dominance in the macobmer and ensures that she will keep his wealth presumably the only reason they married in the first place. Macomber tries to rectify this by standing his ground before a charging buffalo.
Macomber struggles with his position within shrot wilderness, wondering if it is more honorable to be like Wilson or to heed his instinct for self-preservation by fleeing from wounded animals.
Whatever one thinks of Wilson, the change in Francis Macomber comes when he becomes like Wilson. Her motivations are more often narrated by Wilson, the great white hunter, who thinks very little of her, except for her beauty and her sexuality when erneest is quiet.
A short story, written in that bold-stroke Hemingway style, you can see why it has been chosen as representative of his work. And she is guilty—of infidelity; and of accepting the adolescent touchstone of manhood—standing firm before an onrushing wounded lion or buffalo—so heartily embraced by the white hunter, her husband, and Hemingway himself.
